That’s A Wrap (For 2012)!

Since the summer of this year, we have been working hard as a two-man team to get the film out to the world, and we’re pleased to report that the launch has been a great success. We released the DVD and download at the end of November, just over three weeks ago, and since then we’ve sent hundreds of copies all over the globe, as far away as the Cayman Islands, Singapore, Alaska, New Zealand, Japan, Taiwan, Brazil, and of course all over the UK, Europe and the USA.

This is the first feature-length documentary we’ve made, and our first attempt at running our own shop through which to distribute it. We’re incredibly happy with the reception that the film has had (some of which has kindly been made public on the reviews page). We guessed that what we’d made would challenge a lot of expectations, particularly within the adventure/outdoor film scene, and it seems we guessed correctly. To the great many of you who have been able to enjoy the story for what it is, we thank you for your open-mindedness.

Next year will see a number of screening and Q&A events, not just in the UK but overseas. If you’re interested in coming along to one of these, register now and let us know your country and city so we can judge the demand. (If you’re already subscribed to the mailing list, you can update your city and country details using the link you’ll find at the bottom of your most recent email from us.)

We’ll also be announcing the release of the book which accompanies the film. Look out for that in January.

Finally, watch out for the extra video material we’ll be putting online over the next few months. There’s so much material to share that never made it into the final cut, and it would be a shame to leave it gathering dust!

We’re taking a break now (though the download will remain available instantly throughout the holiday season). We’d like to wish you a Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year, and thank you for your support during this journey!

Announcing Janapar’s Release Date

Yesterday evening, James and I signed-off the master copy of Janapar and committed our first run of DVDs to manufacture.

This is a huge milestone for us on this journey. And we are really happy to announce that we can now confirm the release date for the DVD and digital download of the film.

Janapar will be available to order on DVD and as a digital download from janapar.com as of 9am on Tuesday 27th November.

We’ll be shipping orders until December 19th, the UK cut-off for Christmas deliveries. Orders from Western Europe will need to be made by 11th December, and from the rest of the world by December 4th.

Subscribe now to the mailing list to ensure that you don’t miss this window. We’ll also send you a discount code on the day of release, which will work right up until December 19th, and for pre-orders of the book as well.

Kickstarting the book of Janapar generates over £2,000 in pledges on Day One

Today’s a really exciting day. No, not because it’s Halloween. (Though I have indeed carved a massive face out of a pumpkin.)

No — it’s exciting because we’ve launched the Kickstarter campaign to complete and publish the book of Janapar.

The response today has been stupendous. Before I’d got out of bed, £100 had been pledged. By lunchtime it was at £1,000 and rising. At the time of writing — the end of Day 1 of 21 — we’ve reached over £2,000 of the £6,000 we need to complete and publish the book ourselves!

This is a good chance to be amongst the first to read and watch Janapar. A £10 pledge will get you a signed copy of the finished book, hot off the press. £25 will get you the long-awaited DVD as well.

Please make a pledge now on the Kickstarter project page for Janapar.

How To Shoot A Feature Film With A Cast & Crew Of One

Is it possible to be taken seriously as a first-time filmmaker if your director, DOP, camera operator, sound recordist, driver, fixer, logistics manager, stills photographer, voiceover artist and lead talent are all the same person?

James Newton and Tom Allen think it’s possible, and they’ve got some very convincing evidence to prove it. In this Q&A, they talk about their feature documentary Janapar, and how Tom went from having never picked up a video camera to shooting a Raindance-selected feature film — in the space of a single project.

Announcing Janapar’s World Premiere at the 20th Raindance Film Festival

We are thrilled to announce that Janapar has made the official selection for the 20th Raindance Film Festival.

Held in London between September 26th and October 7th 2012, Raindance is the largest independent film festival in the UK, and is listed by Variety as one of the ‘top 50 film festivals in the world’.

Being selected is valuable confirmation of the human story at the heart of our film. Our distinctly un-glamorous ‘production office’ (i.e. conservatory) is already hard at work to make sure that the premiere is the success we hope it’ll be, and that we make the most of this fantastic opportunity to publicly launch the project.

Raindance have given us a flattering write-up on their own website. Janapar will be screened at 3pm on Friday 28th of September at the Apollo Cinema in Piccadilly Circus, and we welcome you to attend the event. Tickets go on sale on the 10th of September.

For press and media enquiries, please divert your attention to the press resources page.

Official Trailer Released

The first incarnation of Janapar’s public trailer has been published for a couple of months now. But in the unlikely event that you haven’t seen it, here is the trailer once again, which we encourage you to share with your networks:

We’ll be updating the News section far more regularly from now on, as momentum starts building towards the film’s public premiere.
